Rafa Benitez will be sacked by Real Madrid if they the first Clasico of the season against Barcelona on Saturday before Zinedine Zidane is appoint as the new first team manager, according to Mundo Deportivo.
The Spanish newspaper have come out with this extraordinary story the day before the biggest game of the season so far with Benitez under intense pressure despite only one defeat this season.
The timing of that defeat (right before the international break) didn’t help the mood at Madrid. Players are already said to be unhappy that the former Liverpool boss is in charge.
Now Florentino Perez is considering a change. He was once a big fan of Benitez. He thought that the Madrid old boy had the no-nonsense attitude that would get the best out of the squad, an attitude Ancelotti doesn’t have.
However, players have not responded well to his appointment and although they have the best defensive record in Europe, fans are unhappy with how his tactics are affecting the club’s attacking identity.
Zidane has been earmarked by Perez as Madrid’s Guardiola, a former star who can come back and command the respect of his pupils, inspiring them to great success.
But ideally Zidane would not want to begin such a tenure mid-season. However, this story should be taken with a pinch of salt because MD are based in Barcelona and fans have often leveled accusations about at newspapers of trying to destabilize a rival team prior to a big match.
